After months of planning, Day 0 was finally here. Peter and Christian touched down in Frankfurt with bikes boxed, legs eager, and spirits high. The first task was always going to be a little daunting – reassembling the bikes in the middle of Frankfurt Airport – but with a bit of patience (and Peter’s knack for bike mechanics) everything came together smoothly. There’s something satisfying about clicking that last wheel in place, knowing the adventure is about to begin.
Bikes ready, we wheeled them straight onto the train bound for Bamberg. The German efficiency didn’t disappoint – within hours of landing we were rolling through countryside, watching villages and fields blur past the windows.
In Bamberg we were welcomed by Michael, who made sure the first order of business was a few well-earned beers. There’s no better way to arrive in Bavaria than with a stein in hand, and Bamberg is a town that takes its brewing seriously. After the long journey, that first sip was pure magic.
The evening was capped off with a lovely dinner with Michael and Steffi, old friends of Peter’s, whose hospitality set the tone for the trip ahead. Good food, good company, and the comfort of knowing the hard work was still to come. With an early night, we were ready to begin the real riding the next day.
